About Dave Law

In my mid teens I started training in a few different styles. After high school I began training with more of a professional interest. I started with traditional kung-fu in 1989 and acquired my black belt in 1993.

I was an assistant instructor for 2 of those 4 years. After studying traditional systems for several years I decided to search for a more practical style. I began exploring and experimenting in many different styles; going to seminars, private lessons and classes all focusing completely on practical self defense. These systems included: boxing, kick boxing, muay thai, and jujitsu.

These systems were great in their own regard, but I still felt that something was lacking as each was designed as a sports system. They seemed lacking practical application of street defense. In a street fight there are no rings, rules, gloves, or referees.

I then began studying jeet-kune-do(JKD) and philipino martial arts. Since then, I have also spent several more years studying with different teachers that had the same path in their training. These systems also included win-chung, small circle jujitsu, arnis, and kali. The goal of my training was to develop a system of martial arts based on the practical self defense applications of the techniques I acquired from the other systems I have studied.I then began studying jeet-kune-do(JKD) and philipino martial arts. The goal of my training was to develop a system of martial arts based on the practical self defense applications of the techniques I acquired from the other systems I have studied.

By 1999 I developed a style that incorporated all of the elements of the aforementioned martial arts that I thought would be practical in the application of a purely self defense oriented multi-system martial art.

Development:

Realizing that you need many different systems and styles to try and make a more complete style through the help of many different instructors with the same goal in mind. They passed down their best years and knowledge to to me, knowing what I was after. I was not interested in competitions, rules, regulations or set styles. If it worked, I incorporated it. If you study one system, it binds you to that one system. eg. Boxing- only incorporates punches, no kicks. Kick boxing- no traps, no weapons. Ground work- no stand up. Judo- rules, regulations and no striking. I wanted to develop a system where everything connects effectively; not just a trail of different techniques.

It had to work together, which is easier said than done. I also needed my system to be practical for anyone regardless of age, size or gender. I wanted a system that could easily be tailored to an individual regardless of their body structure. My system has been in effect for more than 12 years. My system and training is always progressing and incorporating new and useful tools and ideas.

I would like to think that my system is unique for the fact that I am only interested in street defense. Many schools out there only focus on one style, maybe two. Many schools can be broken down into either traditional or competitive schools, very few focus solely on self defense.
